Update: Seems like they have a new kind of preventative measure in place, explanation below.
BEFORE I run the PTR client, I see these files:
Nothing extreme except for different file names.
But AFTER I run the PTR client, I see these additional files:
Now. When I run the regular WoW client, my patches stay my patches and no new files appear when I have the game running.
It appears that this is an attempt by Blizzard to 'lock' the files from being edited.
Older info:
I'm trying out the new things and events in the PTR and decided to bring one of the model edits into the PTR Data folder, when I noticed there are no more "patch" file names in there. (See Image).
Update: Image has been updated after completely downloading ALL of the PTR client.
Still, I threw in the blood
elf patch and ran the PTR WoW. Simply put, it crashed at the character menu.
I have no idea if this means that Blizzard is combating texture/model edits in this fashion, but I simply wanted the MOD community to be aware of it since I do not see anyone else talking about it right now.
Also, my PTR client download is not completely finished yet, so that may be part of the reason why it's crashing. Yet I feel that this probably has to do with them re-organizing the file structure.
Perhaps the "patches" would work under a different file name.
