I've been researching the problem we are facing regarding model edits.
I am positive the problem lies at least partly within the MPQ format. I did several tests to prove this:
I determined that character model data is being loaded from wow-update-13287.MPQ I then extracted the contents of wow-update-13287.MPQ using the same editor, and immediately re-compressed it using the editor, with the same list file and attributes file. I then replaced wow-update-13287.MPQ with the re-compressed MPQ. WoW hung on startup.
Essentially, the current version of the MPQ editor does not support creating the new version of MPQ files that blizzard now uses to store some data. The exceptions to this are the SoundCache MPQs, they utilize an older version of the MPQ format. That is how we can load texture data into them. Model data loaded via SoundCache crashes the game when it is displayed, so that means that model edits themselves may need to be re-done, similar to the BC to WoTLK change. Additionally, there are MD5 checksum lists included in OldWorld.MPQ. I do not know what those MD5 lists include, but if they have character model data checksums, we could remove or circumvent them via a new MPQ editor or a new version of WoWme.
tl;dr The MPQ editor is outdated, Model edits themselves may be outdated. We will have to wait for someone to create an updated version of the MPQ editor, model tools, and StormLib. Updated tools will likely give us the same functionality as before.
